Commodore has reduced the starting price of its Callback 8020 flip phone to $399, down from $499, by switching to recycled "post-consumer" memory chips and making the previously bundled earphones optional. The company announced the change six days before pre-orders open on June 30th, citing the global memory shortage that has pushed DRAM prices to record highs. Buyers who prefer factory-fresh memory can upgrade at checkout, while four of five colorways now qualify for the lower price.
The Callback 8020 features 4 GB of memory and a MediaTek Helio G81 processor. Memory contract prices rose 90-95% in early 2026 as Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron shifted production to high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators. This has forced vendors to restart DDR4 lines and prompted IDC to forecast PC price increases of up to 8% this year. Pre-orders open June 30th, with shipping expected within six months, contingent on FCC approval.
