Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has called for revenge for the death of his father and predecessor Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israeli air strike on 28 February. In his first public message since the funeral ceremonies began, he stated that vengeance was the "will of the nation" and that it would happen regardless of his presence.
Many Iranians at the funerals carried placards calling for the killing of US President Donald Trump, who warned that any such plans would lead to the US "decimate and destroy all areas" of Iran. The war began with US and Israeli attacks on 28 February, and a ceasefire was signed in June but later declared over by Trump after attacks on commercial tankers in Omani waters.
