An 18-month-old toddler who was found unresponsive in a pool in Gilbert, Arizona, on 8 February was declared dead at a hospital but later discovered alive in the facility's cold room. First responders performed life-saving measures before the child was transported to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, where Dr. Aryan Toosi pronounced him dead at 18:20. A transporter from the medical examiner's office found the child breathing five hours later.
The child was flown to another hospital and has since recovered and been released. Police are recommending negligence charges against the parents, citing a strong smell of marijuana at the home and possible unsupervised pool access. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office has not yet decided on charges. The hospital conducted a review and called the incident a heartbreaking situation, declining further comment.
