Valve engineers Pierre-Loup Griffais and Yazan Aldehayyat explained that the Steam Machine's $1,049 starting price reflects current component costs, not original expectations from two years ago. They emphasized that the device's value is tied to users' existing Steam libraries, making it most appealing to those with large game collections. The hardware program is designed to be self-sustained, not subsidized by software sales, which keeps the PC ecosystem open.

The engineers defended the 8GB VRAM decision, stating that games requiring more would be too slow for a TV-based system anyway. They highlighted the massive single heatsink and 120mm fan that cool CPU, GPU, and memory together, allowing dynamic thermal allocation. While 4K gaming is possible with FSR upscaling, the default resolution is 1080p for safety, with plans to make resolution settings more visible per game.
